In this update, we tell you about a new article explaining how to create a client ID and secret for Gmail, tell you about changes coming to Google Photos support in SyncBackPro and also remind you about Upgrade Assurance.

Additionally, SyncBack has been updated. For a comprehensive list of changes, please visit our changes page.

Google Photos

We are reaching out to inform you about an upcoming change by Google that will affect how SyncBackPro interacts with Google Photos for backup purposes.

Starting March 31st, 2025, Google will require all applications that access Google Photos to use the new Google Photos Picker API. This change means that applications like SyncBackPro will no longer be able to back up your Google Photos automatically.

The new Google Photos Picker API is designed to enhance privacy and security by requiring user interaction to manually select individual photos and videos for access. Unfortunately, this fundamentally prevents automated backup solutions from functioning as they previously did, as automatic and comprehensive access to your entire Google Photos library will no longer be possible.

You can read more about this change in Google’s official announcement here: Google Photos Picker API Launch and Library API Updates

We understand that this may be an inconvenience for those who rely on SyncBackPro for Google Photos backups. However, this is a decision made by Google, and it impacts all third-party backup applications, not just SyncBackPro.

Creating Gmail client ID and secret

Although you can use application passwords with Gmail (to email logs or backup your email) you may want to instead use the more secure OAuth method. To do this you must first create a unique client ID and client password. Think of these as usernames and passwords, so instead of entering your real username and password into an application (like SyncBack) you can instead use the client ID and client password. This process is the same as creating a client ID and password for GDrive, with the only difference being the scopes that are used. Scopes define what can be done by the application that uses the client ID and password.

Upgrade Assurance

As a reminder, we recently updated our policy on purchasing Upgrade Assurance. Previously Upgrade Assurance could not be purchased if SyncBackPro or SyncBackSE was purchased over a month ago. Also, it could not be renewed if it had already been deactivated. This is no longer the case and now Upgrade Assurance can be purchased any time after SyncBackPro or SyncBackSE has been purchased and can also be reactivated if it has been deactivated.

To check your eligibility, and also see your Upgrade Assurance status, visit our Upgrade Store and enter your serial number.
