News

In this update, we have two new articles: Concerning and Confusing Aspects of Backups and Virtual Disks. Also, we're testing extra support via A.I. and telling you about two features introduced in SyncBack V11.

Price Increases - Upgrade Now!

For the first time in over a decade we're increasing the prices for new purchases and upgrades. Upgrade Assurance pricing is not being increased at this time. If you are thinking about upgrading, or purchasing more licenses of SyncBackPro or SyncBackSE, then we recommend doing it now before the price increase on 1st June 2024.

Egnyte

As we mentioned previously, if you are using Egnyte then you should create your own keys as soon as possible. On May 25th 2024 Egnyte will be throttling the default Egnyte key that SyncBackPro uses, which means all communication with Egnyte will be considerably slower unless you switch to using your own key.

Concerning and Confusing Aspects of Backups

As most people know, having a backup of your files is crucial. Backup is especially important to businesses. In a 2022 survey, 76% of respondents said that they experienced a severe loss of critical data in the past year, and 45% of them lost data permanently. Despite the importance of backups, many find the process confusing or concerning, which can hinder the implementation of a backup process. Read our article to learn more.

Virtual Disks

In the realm of computing, the concept of virtualization has revolutionized the way we manage resources, offering unprecedented flexibility and efficiency. At the heart of this revolution lies the virtual disk, an emulation of a physical hard disk within a virtual environment. Among the most notable formats in this category are Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) and Hyper-V Virtual Hard Disk (VHDX), both pioneered by Microsoft. Read our article to learn about virtual disks.

Support via A.I.

We are evaluating if it is useful to provide customers with the option of using A.I. for technical and pre-sales support. It will not be a replacement for the support we already provide and we are not going to replace our support with A.I. It is meant purely as an alternative option for getting immediate support. Us pesky humans need to sleep and do other non-work related tasks, so we are not always available.

Please note that, as with all A.I., it can get things wrong. It is not perfect and it may make mistakes and provide incorrect answers. If you need reliable human support simply contact us. Also, if you have any feedback on this A.I. option please let us know.

You can access A.I. support via our web site.

New V11 Features

SyncBackPro/SE V11 introduced a small, but potentially very useful feature: compressed network traffic. You can find this feature (Request traffic is compressed) on the Copy/Delete -> Advanced settings page for a profile. If enabled, and you are copying files to or from SMB network shares, and SMB protocol version V3.1.1 or greater is used (introduced in Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016), then SyncBack requests that the network traffic be compressed. If you are copying large files, that are compressible, then this may improve performance. Note that the files themselves are not stored compressed, only that the data that is transmitted over the network is compressed. This option is only available on Windows 10 1903 (Build 18362, 19H1) and newer. It is also only used with the Windows standard file copying method.

SyncBack has long supported having the option to run programs before and/or after a profile is run. This can be useful, for example, if you want to close programs before a backup is made, start a VPN connection, etc. A new option introduced in SyncBack V11 is to have the run after program only be run if the profile fails. This can be useful, for example, if you need something to be done only if a profile fails, e.g. notify a 3rd party system.
